Nearly every treadmill phone holder is designed for one job: putting a screen where you can see it while you walk. If you are filming yourself during training, you need close to the opposite, and the product descriptions will not tell you which one you are buying.
The three things that decide it
- Distance. Filming your body needs roughly 70 to 110 cm between phone and subject. A console mount gives you about 15 cm, which frames your chin.
- Orientation. Vertical video needs a portrait lock that holds under vibration. Many cradles are sized for a phone lying flat, and a portrait phone is taller and more top-heavy on the same clamp.
- Steadiness at speed. Steady at walking pace means nothing. The question is whether it holds at running pace, when deck oscillation takes over as the dominant input. We go into why in detail here.
The four options
Console clip or hook mount
The default category. Hooks over the display panel or clamps to the handrail bar. Typically $8 to $27. Examples include the Xxerciz console holder and the many gooseneck clamp mounts.
Fine for watching. For filming it puts the phone too close and too low, frequently covers speed and incline controls, and sits on the panel, which is the most flexible part of the machine.
Magnetic gym mount
Strong magnet arrays that stick to any steel surface, marketed at creators filming their own sessions. Roughly $25 to $47.
Genuinely useful in a rack or on a machine frame, and portrait works fine. On a treadmill the problem is that the available steel is usually the console surround, which puts you back at option 1's distance. Magnets also transmit vibration rigidly, with no isolation at all.
Adding a motorcycle vibration dampener
Quad Lock's Vibration Dampener (~$25) and RAM's Vibe-Safe adapter (~$39) both use silicone grommet suspension and both allow portrait mounting.
These are well-made and solve a real problem, on a motorcycle. Quad Lock's own documentation says the grommets are tuned for higher frequency vibration and that more movement may be noticeable at lower frequencies, which is the band a treadmill deck actually operates in. This is the most common disappointed purchase in this category.
A floor tripod
An ordinary extending phone tripod, $14 to $40, standing on the floor in front of the machine.
Nothing touches the treadmill, so vibration is not transmitted at all. Distance and portrait are both trivially solved. The catch is purely spatial: it has to stand somewhere, and in most home setups that is a walkway, and in a commercial gym it is usually not allowed.

If you are buying a mount anyway
- Clamp to the side rail, not the console. Stiffer, closer to the frame, and it leaves your controls accessible.
- Avoid suction and adhesive. Both fail on a machine that vibrates daily. Screw clamps do not.
- Check the clamp fits a straight section. Curved consoles and tapered rails are where most mounts tilt or slip.
- Prefer a mechanical portrait detent over a single friction knob, which works loose over a session.
- Metal cradle over plastic. Extra mass lowers the resonant frequency, which produces slower wobble that is easier to stabilise in post.
- Test at your actual running speed before deciding it works. Walking pace tells you nothing.
